Kargo Market food hall in Salford Quays is celebrating the Lunar New Year by hosting a weekend of cultural events to welcome the Year of the Horse.

Located within the Quayside shopping centre, Salford’s biggest food hall is hosting a programme of family activities, traditional crafts and live performances on February 21 and 22.

Festivities begin on Saturday morning with free kids crafts running from 10am to 12pm, offering younger visitors the chance to get creative and learn more about Lunar New Year traditions.

Sunday’s schedule is packed with interactive workshops and entertainment throughout the day.

A dim sum-making workshop will run from 11am to 12pm allowing people to delve deep into a new culinary world. At the same time, a mahjong tournament will take place between 11am and 4pm, inviting players to test their skills in the traditional Chinese tile-based game.

Visitors can explore all of the Lunar New Year pop ups between 12pm and 4pm on the day.

Creative workshops continue into the afternoon, with lantern and calligraphy sessions, two art forms tying in with the celebrations.

The weekend event will also host a lion dance performance at 1.30pm on the 22nd, marking one of the main highlights of the weekend.

The lion dance is centuries-old Chinese cultural tradition performed to ward off evil spirits and attract good fortune.

Deputy director of Salford Hong Kongers Community Interest Company Evelyn Lo said:It’s our festival now so we’re going to have a makers market inside Kargo market. And we also have a lion dance as a performance and also the Mahjong tournament, it will be brilliant. I think the tournament itself has over 40 participants so everyone’s involved.”

The fun-filled weekend of events can be booked via the Kargo MKT website.
