Centre-back Oliver Turton scored a towering header as Salford City edged towards a historic first promotion to League One with a 2-0 win over top-of-the-league Bromley.

The Ammies went into the game just three points away from automatic promotion, whilst Bromley had already secured their first promotion in the club’s history.

With Salford’s last game against Gillingham ending in a draw, and a league title on the line for the Ravens, it was all to play for.

The game began with half-to-half football as both teams searched for an opener. There were some moments of promise for both teams, with Rosaire Longelo nearly placing it in the corner in the opening minutes.

Soon after, the Ravens had a chance of their own as momentum switched, Nicke Kabamba and Zach Medley caused some stress for Matthew Young early doors, firing two close attempts that were kept at bay by the young keeper.

The Ammies found their stride after the break and started to find themselves more and more chances.

Soon after, Jorge Grant grabbed the opener in the 56th minute as Salford continued to pile the pressure on

The ball worked its way to Grant right on the edge of the box, firing a low-driven shot right past the outstretched hand of Grant Smith, with the assist coming from Luke Garbutt.

The pressure continued late into the half; Salford were clearly hungry for the push to League One.

A corner in the 76th minute was struck in by goal scorer Jorge Grant, which sweetly found the head of Oliver Turnton.

The veteran was able to find the back of the net on his 500th career appearance, which flew straight down the middle of the net, surely a memorable moment for the Ammie.

While Bromley continued to try and fight for one back in the end, it wasn’t enough after.

Salford City are now in the automatic promotion spot with one more game ahead of them away at Crawley. After a shaky season at times, fans are hoping that they can finish the job next Saturday and make history for the club.
