Salford City have completed their first signing for the summer, agreeing a deal for Rotherham midfielder Joe Powell once his contract expires at the end of the month.
Powell, 27, has played over 230 games in League One for Rotherham and Burton Albion, but has chosen to play for Salford City following Rotherham’s relegation to League Two.
The West Ham academy graduate featured regularly for Rotherham throughout much of the campaign, before a hamstring injury ruled him out of the club’s final league fixtures.
After agreeing a two-year deal at the club, Powell said: “I’m over the moon to get started, I’m looking forward to the season and hopefully some very good things to come.”
The midfielder added, “I’ve got a lot to give; hopefully I can put that on show. You can expect to see a lot of desire, a lot of passion. I’ll cover every blade of grass that I can, and on top of that I can bring quality with the final pass, breaking the lines, some long-distance shots, so hopefully I can bring a bit of excitement.”
Rotherham are likely to be contenders for promotion alongside Salford this season, and taking a useful player from promotion rivals is a great coup for the Ammies.
The Englishman made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup for his childhood club West Ham; however, he did not make any subsequent appearances for the Hammers.
His previous stint in League Two came with Northampton on loan from West Ham back in January of 2019, where he scored twice and assisted once in ten appearances.
Interestingly, he is one part of a footballing brotherly duo with Jack Powell. Jack plays for Crewe Alexandra, also in League Two – he is five years Joe’s senior.
