Proud Salfordian, Julie Austin, has been chosen as one of Salford’s 100 Heroes in recognition of her work tackling loneliness among older people.
Julie, 66, was born and raised in Upper Broughton and has spent her entire life there, dedicating herself to improving her community.
After retiring from working as a housekeeper at the once-loved Fairways hotel, she now lives in Broomedge sheltered accommodation and is the main organiser of regular social events throughout the year. These events aim to inspire conversation, new friendships and community.
Julie and her friend began organising these activities four years ago after noticing how isolated many of the individuals in her building had become. They push postcards with invites through the residents’ doors once a month, inviting them to come along to their next meet-up. Julie organises a myriad of different activities, ranging from games and film nights to live entertainment and religious celebrations.
There are individuals from many different ethnicities within the building, and whilst there may be some language barriers, Julie doesn’t let this get in the way of their community spirit.
Over the years she has been involved in everything from cooking and preparing a Christmas meal for her neighbours on Christmas Day, to decorating the communal area for Yom Kippur to ensure her Jewish neighbours felt celebrated during this holiday.
Julie said: “I suffer with anxiety and depression myself, so I know how bad it is to be stuck inside not connecting with anyone. Organising these events gives me a purpose; it helps me get out of my shell whilst encouraging others to do the same.”
Recently, Julie organised a 100th birthday party for one of the residents at her accommodation, where over 30 people came, including the Mayor of Salford.
Julie said: “The lady whose birthday it was loved it. It was great to see how much her face lit up as everyone was having fun, listening to music and enjoying themselves.”
Julie was also awarded for her efforts last year with the Role Model in Ageing Award by Salix Homes, the sheltered accommodation provider that owns Julie’s place of residence.
“Julie is a true community champion, and we are so pleased that she has been recognised as one of Salford’s 100 Heroes as part of the city’s centenary celebrations,” said Robyn Green, Salix Homes Housing Officer.
“She always goes above and beyond to bring her neighbours together, foster inclusion and create a welcoming community where people feel supported and connected.
“Julie is the epitome of a good neighbour, with her kindness and commitment making a real difference within her community every day.”
