The University of Salford has restricted the use of their campuses with ‘limited exceptions’ with effect from Wednesday 18 March 2020 due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Following the suspension of face-to-face teaching for all students, including third-year undergraduates and postgraduates on Monday 16 March, the decision to close all physical campuses has been prompted by recent advice from the University’s Contingency Management team.
Students at the university were informed in an email from the Vice-Chancellor that all buildings were to be closed as of 9pm on March 18.
As well as this, the Clifford Whitworth Library has been closed until further notice from 7pm, with additional online resources being made available from 5pm on the Library website.
Professor Helen Marshall provided the following information for students issued by Public Health England:
- Stop non-essential contact with others and stop all unnecessary travel
- Anyone who lives with someone who has a persistent cough and / or high temperature should stay home for 14 days (applies to entire household)
- Avoid all non-essential contact, including trips to pubs, clubs, etc, and with an end to all mass gatherings
She also added: “Of paramount importance is the safety and wellbeing of our University community.
“I am grateful to all of our students and staff who are working tirelessly to help the broader NHS response”
The total cases in the UK as of 09:00 (GMT) on 18/03/2020 is 2,626, with 103 deaths recorded, and 65 recoveries, according to Public Health England’s online dashboard.
The university is expected to provide students with questions about the assessment processes, graduation and other activities as soon as possible.
Students are also urged to continue to check their emails and the Student Hub for the most up to date information.
