It has been announced that Salford’s own Christopher Eccleston will return to his role as the Doctor Who’s Ninth Doctor for the first time since his departure 15 years ago.
A series of 12 original, full-cast audio plays will star Eccleston’s seldom seen incarnation of the Time Lord as he embarks on a host of new adventures.

Eccleston, who grew up in Little Hulton before rising to stardom in the 1990s, played The Doctor for one series alongside Billie Piper, with many attributing the show’s successful revival in 2005 to Eccleston’s gritty take on the character.
Whilst Eccleston left the role after only 13 episodes, fans have long been clamouring for his return.
Whilst he turned down an invitation to appear in the programme’s 50th anniversary special in 2013, many have speculated that Eccleston may return to the role following a newfound willingness to attend conventions and talk more openly about his time as The Doctor.
In a statement released by production company Big Finish, Eccleston said: “After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.”
Eccleston’s memoir, entitled ‘I Love the Bones of You’, was released last year and spoke of how Eccleston’s attitude towards the role had been changed by recent experiences with fans.
He wrote: “These days, I feel nothing but positive about the show, to the extent I have even started doing conventions, something I’d been wary of because I always wanted to earn my money from acting.
“Forget producers, forget politics – here are real people who have seen me do my stuff and want to shake my hand.”
The first volume of these new adventures will be released in May 2021.
