Salford City’s Sky Bet League Two clash with Crawley Town was postponed after Storm Eunic waterlogged the pitch at the Peninsula Stadium.
The surface passed the first inspection at 9am but later in the morning, the referee decided that it was unplayable. Tickets will still be valid for the re-arranged date and refunds will also be available.
Away fans were left frustrated after some already had made the 240-mile journey from Sussex before the announcement was made at 11:40 this morning.
The Ammies’ last home game vs Port Vale was also called off with only an hour and a half before kickoff with many fans questioning the quality of the turf against tough conditions.
Co-owner Gary Neville announced that he would refund tickets and fund the Port Vale supporters and team coaches for the re-arranged tie. Cooked food was also given out to away fans and a local homeless shelter.
This isn’t the first time Salford has faced issues with the turf at the Peninsula Stadium. Two consecutive home games were also called off last season in February due to a waterlogged pitch. With talks of a ground swap with Rugby League team Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium, some fans feel like upgrading the pitch isn’t a priority for Salford, who currently lies 10th in League Two five points off the Playoff spots.
