Salford City acquired four new players to bolster their squad as the January window comes to a close.
The deadline day signing of Luke Bolton from Premier League champions Manchester City is a bold statement to the rest of League Two as they push for a play-off place. Bolton was at Manchester City for 11 years and has International experience for England under 20’s. Bolton is a right midfielder but he can also play as a right back.

Salford also signed Millwall’s Matt Smith on an 18-month deal. The striker made over 100 appearances for Millwall, scoring 22 goals in all competitions. Smith has plied his trade in the Championship for the last 10 years, appearing for clubs such as Fulham and Leeds. The 32 year-old said on Twitter: “Really excited ahead of this new challenge & chapter with @SalfordCityFc.”
The Ammies made their first signing of the window on January 12th, bringing in Stephen Kelly from Rangers on loan. Kelly has appeared nine times at International level, for Scotland under 21’s. The 21 year-old will provide some creativity in the midfield for Salford. Kelly has previous first team experience, making over over 20 appearances for Scottish Championship side Ayr United and appearing in the Scottish Premiership for Ross County.
Midfielder Ryan Watson joined Salford from Tranmere Rovers on a year and a half deal. Along with the arrival of Stephen Kelly, Watson will bolster The Ammies midfield area. Watson was Northampton’s Player of the Season for the 2020-2021 and also finished as their top scorer. The 28 year-old has plenty of experience winning promotion three times.

There were two main outgoings for Salford in the window with striker Tom Elliot going on loan to Bradford City and defensive midfielder Alex Denny joining Welsh giants TNS. Elliot had scored three goals prior to leaving for Bradford. Denny made three appearances for Salford this season, all coming in the EFL Trophy.
Overall, the transfer window was a promising one for The Ammies. They managed to maintain all their key players and strengthen their team across the pitch.
