The biggest green wall façade in Europe is set to be built as part of a Salford office development.

Located on the corner of Irwell Street and Stanley Street, set to be completed in May 2023,’Eden’ will have zero carbon emissions and will harvest rainwater for amenities such as drinking water and shower facilities.

The 12-storey, 115,000 square foot development will have an exterior layer of over 350,000 plants making what is claimed to be the biggest green wall in all of Europe and second biggest in the world.

Developers say the green wall will be entirely self-sufficient due to its access to regular sunlight and rainwater.

The office development will include birdboxes; other low-carbon features include low-energy LEDs.

When asked how Eden is different from current office developments, Ryan Devlin, Corporate Communications Manager at Muse Developments said; “It’s currently the only building in the UK designed to achieve NABERS rating 5.5 stars and it has the largest living wall in Europe, delivering a 174% net gain in biodiversity, are just two of its significant features.

“We wanted to challenge ourselves and the team to be as innovative as possible and to create the most sustainable building that Muse have delivered to date for this gateway location to New Bailey, which deserves a standout building.”

Mr Devlin reaffirmed how significant it is for corporations to reduce carbon emissions as soon as possible, “It’s not just important, its critical to lead by example and strive to become Net Zero. Big corporations have the resources, both in monetary and people terms, to be able to pioneer new ways of working and strategies to enable smaller business and individuals to follow.  Research tells us that almost 40% of millennials are choosing a job because of the companies sustainability policy so adopting these measures is key to attracting and retaining talent.”

With the completion date just over a year away, the City of Salford waits eagerly to see which global corporations will move their operations to New Bailey Street, when questioned about this, Mr Devlin kept his cards close to his chest, “It’s too early to hint for now but watch this space. Attracting businesses that wish to make the move towards a more sustainable future are key for us. Our research informs us that over 1000 companies in the UK have committed to sustainability targets and this is a trend that will continue to increase.”

New Bailey are already offering businesses leases for office space; Place North West have previously reported that media conglomerate Virgin were looking at acquiring office space at Eden.

Eden will be part of the wider ‘New Bailey Square’ project located next to Salford Central Station which will also feature leisure and commercial opportunities. This includes Four New Bailey, a 175,000 square foot Grade A office development, still in construction, which has been pre-let in its entirety to BT and Three New Bailey which has been let to HMRC.
