TO celebrate the opening of the brand new Peninsula stadium on Moor Lane, Salford City played host to players from the Class of ’92 on Sunday afternoon.

The game resulted in a 4-4 draw with end-to-end action in both halves and there was a full stadium of fans supporting the teams.

Salford City, who are currently top of the National League North table, were put through their paces as they played against the likes of Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, who all part-own the football club.

Former Liverpool players Jamie Carragher and Steve McManaman, Irish goalkeeper Shay Given and ex Manchester United forwards Dwight Yorke and Danny Webber also joined the Class of ’92 line-up.

Quays News spoke to some fans ahead of the game to get their opinions on the new stadium.

Frank Hutchinson, from Eccles, said: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic. I think the lads that have come and put the money into the stadium have made a really top job of it. It should make Salford City proud.”

Fans also told us why they believe friendly games are important for a club like Salford City.

Ellen Rushforth, from Sheffield, said: “I think they’re really important as they bring in money and also promote the club itself.

“There’s a lot of people who may not have come if big players like these today were not playing, so I think it’s really good for promoting the smaller clubs.”

Some of the former Manchester United players tweeted after the game and thanked fans for their support.

The Peninsula Stadium was officially opened by Alex Ferguson in October. The club hope the new facilities will help them to grow as a team and continue in their success climbing the football divisions.

Salford’s next game will see them take on North Ferriby United at home on Saturday 18th November.
