The Salford University Dance Society, known as SUDS, danced for 12 hours straight on Thursday 4th April and so far have raised £489.20 for MIND mental health charity.

SUDS decided their third year taking part in the danceathon would raise money for Mind, the event began at 9am and finished at 9pm, with the society raising over £100 before the dancing had even started.

The danceathon started outside of the Student Union, but was moved in doors to the New Adelphi Building on Peel Park Campus, due to rainy weather.

Each hour was host to a different genre of music, it kicked off with ‘chart hour’ and was followed throughout the day by ‘movie soundtrack hour’ to ‘throwback hour’.

An hour was was also based on party classics, where the dancers pulled off well-known routines like ‘YMCA’. SUDS also featured an hour dedicated to the last show, Rise of the Woman, and the upcoming show, Mamma Mia, where passers by were able to watch the routine’s created by the choreographers, Georgia Ellyatt and Emily Stefan.

Georgia spoke to me and said, “Mamma Mia is our upcoming show, which we have both choreographed together, which is kinda coming together now. We haven’t got long left to the show but some of the dances look sick.” Emily supported: “It’s nice to see it finally all come together.”

I also spoke to some members of the society, Annie Inman said she is taking part in the 12 hour Danceathon because she “wanted to raise awareness for the MIND charity and for anyone struggling with a mental health.”

Faith Hiles, also spoke to me and said “It’s something supportive for the charity and it’s charity at the end of the day. We’re dancing, we love to dance, so that is why we’re doing it. We want to donate as much as we can and that is why we’re here today.”

MIND mental health charity says nobody should face a mental health problem alone, they offer more information and support on the website.
