Students are being told by the government that they cannot travel between their home and university unless they have “an exemption to the national restrictions.”

This comes after the recent announcement on 22 February informing the country of the new plan for Covid-19.

They will have to have a test if they wish to go back to their accommodation and may only travel home if they are legally permitted to do so.

This has caused some people to feel added stress to their, already, manic term schedule.

Mia Houghton, Leeds Beckett student nurse, said: “I like to go home every now and then to see my mum and dad and relax a little bit, but now I don’t know if I can.”

She added: “I work long hours at placement and staying in my accommodation for too long can make me feel lonely and homesick so it’d be nice to be able to go home once in a while.”

Adding to this, the government has introduced a new £800 fine for those attending house parties, including in halls of residence, which will double for each repeat offence to a maximum level of £6,400.

Jake Bottomley, UoS Student, claimed that he does not mind the possibility of a fine and will continue to live in Salford even with the new rules.

He said: “There’s no point me moving back home now, I’d need to move all my stuff back and get a test.

“Anyway I believe that being here keeps me more focused and I get more work done, there’s too many distractions at home.”

So students seem to have mixed feelings about the new rules put in place and making that choice is a difficult one.
