Friends of St. Mary’s Park in Walkden are hosting a Poppy Trail this Saturday at 11am.

The drop-in session will allow visitors to paint either a poppy or forget-me-not flower in memory of those affected by the pandemic.

These will then be added to the park’s Remembrance Sunday display.

The Poppy Trail itself will take place from St. Mary’s Park to St. John’s Community Hall following the session, where there will be refreshments and a small service to remember loved ones.

Vicki Tyrer, organiser of the event, said: “I put the idea across after seeing other community groups taking part.

“And with Friends of St Mary’s Park doing a previous poppy event, we decided to extend it and work in partnership with the local church.

“It brings the community together and improves working alongside other local groups because more people want to get involved”.

With a slightly alternate take on remembrance, the Poppy Trail encourages more people to get involved and remember both those in the military and the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“This year we decided to remember those who have lost their lives through the pandemic, as well as loved ones who have served, and continue to serve, in the army.

“Due to last year being such a horrible year, we decided to bring the two together for all those who have lost loved ones.

“The forget-me-nots symbolise always remembering someone and keeping them in your thoughts, whilst the poppies reflect Remembrance Day and show our continuing support for the Armed Forces”.

The flowers will be placed around St. Mary’s Park, on the street heading towards the community hall, and also inside the church.

Everyone is welcome to attend the drop-in session and the following service, with more information available on the Friends of St. Mary’s Facebook page.
