In a game heavily affected by storm Arwen’s freezing and blustery conditions, Irlam showed their bravery and in the second half they were able to display their quality too.

Irlam and Winsford battled hard during the first 45 minutes

Two new signings combined for the first goal as Jordan Southworth fired in a terrific volley when he latched onto Millen Brown’s cross.

Former Toronto man Ethan Beckford ensured Irlam had full control when he slotted home to double the home side’s lead.

The number nine then added gloss to the score-line just moments later to secure his brace and net a third for John Main’s men.  There was an air of controversy about this goal as a linesman appeared to indicate that there has been a foul in the build-up play. However, referee Thomas Haddrell waved play on.

Throughout the match, Beckford showed touches of class which illustrated why he has previously played at a higher level and the two goals were no more than what the striker deserved.

Prior to this weekend’s match, Irlam endured six consecutive defeats.  That poor run consisted of two 4-0 losses so this win will come as a huge relief and will hopefully be a source of confidence which can help the club climb up the NWCFL Premier Division table.

The next league match at the RG3 Digital Stadium is on Friday 17th December when Irlam host Padiham. That match is also Irlam’s last match of 2021.
