A woman has donated her year’s heating allowance to help a Salford food bank provide meals for more than 100 families.
Liz Brown made the ‘lovely’ donation to The Dispensary, a zero waste shop in Walkden, after learning about their services through a relative who works there.
The Dispensary, run by Fay Watts, was then able to purchase an extra 60kg of pasta and rice to donate to CommUNITY Little Hulton food bank service.
“She wanted to donate her heating allowance and she knows that we donate to the food club and can do it with zero waste,” said Fay.
“We got huge brown sacks of staple items, a really, really nice thought – helping other people and also the environment.”
The Dispensary is an eco-friendly store that aims to provide zero-waste items for the people of Salford.
Fay opened the store three years ago after noticing a lack of eco-friendly facilities in the city.
Shortly after, she struck up a relationship with the Little Hulton food bank.
“I felt like Salford needs one and deserves one,” she said. “We used to buy fruit and veg plastic free, but we could only get it in large quantities.
“Rather than go to a middleman and make more money, we decided to give what we knew we weren’t going to sell to the food club.”
This relationship led to weekly food bank donations from The Dispensary and its loyal customers.
Fay explained: “We ask customers at the till if they’d like to donate a pound, we normally get about £28 a week and then we double it to donate £60 a week depending on what we get.”
Liz came to The Dispensary wanting to donate due to its ability to help make her sizable donation zero waste.
Although the amount Liz donated was not disclosed, 2022 winter fuel payments are typically anywhere between £250 and £600.
