Room on the Broom by Tall Stories is at The Lowry this Christmas season, bringing Julia Donaldson’s best-selling 2001 children’s book to life.
Tall Stories kicked off their Salford tour last week at The Lowry, with their production of ‘Room on the Broom’. The popular children’s book, has won 6 book awards and is a perfect introduction to theatre for children. Recommended for children ages 3 and upwards.
As children and parents filled The Lyric of The Lowry, young children were beaming with excitement as the show was preparing to start, ready to embark on a magical adventure.
Children giggled with excitement as the lights went down. Two tall trees stood on either side of the stage with a glowing moon in the middle. The trees branches were in fact broomsticks.
The story follows a witch and her cat on a journey, riding the broomstick and making friends along the way.
The show started off with the audience meeting campers ready for a camping trip, setting the story off with a few hints on what could be coming up. Within moments the witch was flying above and we were taken through the story of Room on the Broom.
The story was engaging, with music and songs and impressive theatre. The friends we met along the way included a fluffy dog, a singing frog and green bird, who all wanted to ride the broom.
The puppets used in the show brought humour and excitement among the children. The cast were exceptional at controlling the puppets to tell the stories of the dog, frog and bird.
An angry dragon also makes an appearance, unluckily, once the broom snap with all the friends on it.
Overall, Room on the Broom was a magnificent production, perfect for introducing children to theatre.
Room on the Broom will be at The Lowry until Sunday 8th January, tickets available here.
