The price of school meals in Salford is to be frozen after the council decided to scrap a planned 10p increase.

The decision to increase the price from £2.10 to £2.20 was originally made last July but delayed in January this year.

The price increase was officially abandoned by Salford City Council cabinet meeting in which Mayor Paul Dennett and chief executive officer Tom Stannard were present.

School meals supplier, Citywide, had wanted the increase to meet higher costs but following a “better than expected government settlement” the council was able to freeze the price.

Councilor Sharmina August, lead member for inclusive economy, anti-poverty and equalities, said: “I’m pleased that we’ve been able to do this, this year. Citywide provides fantastic food across our city. I’m really proud of the service that we provide.”
