Newly opened in 2022, Sakura in Salford is a superb example of comfort food located in an unlikely estate where the food is “delicate, slowly made, and not rushed.”

Located at 8 Salisbury House, St Stephen Street, Salford M3 6AX, Sakura is the corner unit in a row of shops underneath flats.

There is a Rocky Balboa themed takeaway, a convenience store, a launderette, a barber and Sakura, a small café style restaurant that serves Hong Kong and Japanese inspired dishes.

Sakura has been open since 2022 and at a busy lunchtime, queues of people wait to order or collect their food.

The café style restaurant is run by Hong-Kong-born Betty, who describes the menu as a mixture of Hong Kong comfort food and Japanese-style teriyaki rice bowls.

Betty said: “This restaurant is not only Hong Kong style, but also some Japanese style food. We miss Hong Kong, but we also enjoy Japanese food.”

The decision was made to order a beef brisket, tripe and tendon soup with noodles and a bowl of deep-fried pork cutlet with scrambled egg over rice.

The soup had a lovely texture and went down a treat.

The beef brisket was cooked to perfection and the meat was juicy and tender, falling apart with each noodle-full.

The pork cutlet came out sizzling, voluptuous in size and delightfully crispy with soft velvety ribbons of loose scrambled egg alongside whilst a generous portion of rice sits below.

Whilst waiting for the mains, crispy buns, similar to a barmcake, slathered salty butter and sweet condensed milk, were served and went down a treat.

If you want a recommendation from the master, Betty recommends the roast chicken with homemade sauce, saying it is her favourite and it’s totally different from the teriyaki chicken.
