Salford City prepare for a must-win game against local rivals Stockport County in the second round of the EFL Trophy.

The Ammies must avoid a defeat in tonight’s clash in order to keep any hopes of progression into the next round of the cup alive.

Both sides have not faced off since the League Two play-off semi-final, after County ultimately defeating Salford 3-1 on penalties at Edgeley Park in May.

The Ammies are currently fourth in group E, losing 3-0 away to Bolton Wanderers on September 5.

Despite losing their first match in the group, Salford will look to continue their winning form coming off three wins in League Two, the latest result seeing them defeat Crewe Alexandra.

Two goals from Matt Smith and contributions from Ryan Watson and Kevin Berkoe allowed the hosts to turn around a game in which Crewe claimed an early lead after Courtney Baker-Richardson put the visitors ahead.

Salford City manager Neil Wood spoke after the game against Crewe Alexandra. He said: “It’s going to be very difficult to put a lot of importance on that.

“We’ve had to play the same team for the last three games which shows you where we’re at.”

Salford are still struggling with injuries. Luke Garbutt is still out with a groin strain whilst winger Connor McLennan is recovering from surgery on his appendix.

Salford City v Stockport County kicks off at 19.30 at the Peninsula Stadium.
