Irlam has been ranked as a highly desirable place to live for those who commute to Manchester for work.

A study revealed by Selecta UK determined 10 towns in Greater Manchester that are seen as the most desirable for commuters, with Irlam coming in seventh place.

The town’s desirability was determined by commuters on the combination of travel times on trains, affordable house prices, crime rates and good schools.

The study found that Irlam had an average of zero crimes per 1,000 residents, a 16 minute train journey into Manchester, and a nine per cent rate of outstanding schools.

The average price of a house in Irlam is £229,214.

Of the 20 towns analysed Wilmslow ranks in first position overall. Wilmsow is then closely followed by Urmston and Cheadle in the second and third places.

Ashton-Under-Lyne and Stalybridge complete the top five towns.

Covid-19 inspired many home buyers to make the big move outside of cities while remote working was at its peak.

The Greater Manchester region, in particular, proved to have one of the biggest house price increases in all of the UK over the last four years, increasing 36 percent compared to London’s just 14 per cent increase.
