A 21-year-old who trains at a leading gymnastics centre in Salford backed up his gold medal-winning all-round performance by clinching silver in the men’s pommel final at the Commonwealth Games.
Reuben Ward, who turned 21 last weekend, was crowned Scotland’s first-ever men’s all-around gymnastics champion at the Glasgow International Centre on Sunday.
The gymnast continued his stellar performance at the games by securing second place in the pommel final, beaten only by Jordan Carroll of Canada.
His teammate Cameron Lynn claimed bronze as the Scots marked themselves out as a force to be reckoned with ahead of the upcoming European and world championships.
Ward, who trains at the Manchester Academy of Gymnastics in Weaste, appeared overjoyed to share the podium experience with Lynn.
“Scotland is a force to be reckoned with in gymnastics, and we are starting to prove that,” he said, following the event on home soil. “I began it the other day and we are snowballing now.”
In a social media post, the Manchester Academy of Gymnastics hailed Reuben’s “unforgettable” week.
“From making history as the first Scottish gymnast to be crowned Commonwealth All-Around Champion to now adding a Commonwealth Games Silver Medal on pommel horse. An incredible achievement and one we’ll never forget.”
The academy provides gymnastics coaching for all levels and ages, from preschool children to Commonwealth Games heroes.
The Salford-based sports centre added: “We couldn’t be prouder. Congratulations, Reuben!”
