French footballer Anthony Jordan Martial is set to withdraw from Manchester United with a free transfer allowed at the end of this football season.

Martial has been playing for MUFC for nine seasons. They have the option to renew his contract but have decided against the idea.

The club will attempt to sell him in January 2024, and if that fails, Anthony Martial will exit United as a free agent in the summer.

Salford MUFC supporter, Liam Scholes, commented: “It’s probably time to say goodbye to him.

Best known as Noel McManus on Waterloo Road, Liam continued: “The last few seasons he’s shown poor form and hasn’t really played like a ‘Manchester United’ player.

“We need better and a more well rounded replacement.”

In September 2015, the final day of that year’s transfer window, Martial was transferred to Manchester United for a fee of £36 million. This was a world record amount for a player under the age of 20.

The now 28-year-old signed a five year contract in January 2019, but on 25 January 2022 went on loan to Spanish club, Sevilla. During this, he scored only one goal in 12 matches.

Due to three prior clauses in Manchester United’s contract with AS Monaco, and Martial only achieving two of them, the player has managed to save the Red Devils almost £7.2million.

When buying Martial from Monaco, the centre forward was to cost more if he managed to win the ‘Ballon d’Or clause’, which Monaco believed to be “very realistic” at the time. As the club were left eating their words, however, this has now knocked his transfer fee down to £50million.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof’s contract will also expire by the end of the 2024 season, and the club have the option to extend both signings by an additional 12 months.

A 2018 derby day survey by MEN showed that the North and West of Greater Manchester favour Manchester United, with the majority of local fans residing in Salford and Trafford.
