Two homelessness charities in Salford will be taking part in a day of community action tomorrow following an increased demand for their services in recent months.

Emmaus Salford, which supports up to 26 people who were previously homeless, will start the day off by visiting another homelessness organisation, Salford Loaves and Fishes.

Volunteers from Emmaus will attend their morning service to hand out hot drinks and vouchers for food parcels from Emmaus Salford’s food pantry.

The day of action will then continue at St James All Souls Parish for a lunch service. At the service,  Father Ian will read the words from Abbé Pierre’s celebrated 1954 speech which sparked an outpouring of public generosity.

The charity’s community store on Fitzwarren Street will also have a large selection of items available on a pay as you can basis.

Jackie Smith, Chief Executive of Emmaus Salford: “A neighbouring charity, Loaves and Fishes has grappled with increasing demands for support over the past few years. The housing crisis, reported daily, exacerbates the strain.

“Without added support, we urge our community to unite in the ‘Uprising of Kindness,’ backing these crucial services helping people in desperate need.”

“Meeting the constant challenge, Emmaus Salford works to offer more spaces for the homeless and provide essential food. We are more than our charity shops, whilst these shops provide recycling, training and development opportunities as well as our essential income, we want people to know that our core work is homelessness, providing a home as long as needed and rehabilitation through meaningful and purposeful daily contribution.

“But we also find ourselves with an uncertain future given the short-term nature of our lease at our community residential home.”

Both charities are also working together to launch a fundraiser appeal to raise funds to secure support for the two essential services in Salford
