Former Premier League centre-back Alex Bruce has joined Salford City as part of their men’s first-team coaching set-up.
Bruce, 39, was previously manager of Northern Premier League side Macclesfield FC but tendered his resignation with The Silkmen earlier today.
His departure from Moss Lane came at a time when the club were fifth in the league, and just three points behind second-placed Hyde United, with two games in hand.
The son of three-time Premier League winner and former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, Alex played over 350 games for teams such as Hull City and Leeds United before his retirement in 2022.

He became a coach under his father during his spell at West Bromwich Albion, departing after his sacking eight months later. Macclesfield offered him their manager’s role in October 2023, replacing former boss Mark Duffy.
Speaking upon Bruce’s arrival at the club, Salford City Director of Football Ryan Giggs said: “We’re delighted to have Alex join us here to expand our coaching staff, on the recommendation of Karl [Robinson] who was keen to bring him in. Alex will bring a lot of football experience with him and we’d like to welcome him warmly to the club.”
Linking up with The Ammies immediately, he has joined the club as they prepare to travel to Mansfield Town this weekend and continue their impressive start under Robinson.
Salford are in nineteenth place in League Two, but their recent spell of good form have put them just nine points behind the play-off places as the season approaches its conclusion in late April.
