Irlam defeated their local rivals Prestwich Heys 2-1 at Silver Street on Saturday.

Prestwich aimed to further consolidate their play off position after last weeks win against Chadderton, 5-2.

However, two second half free kicks from John Main were enough to guarantee the home side three points.

The Irlam squad had nine ex Heys players starting in the fixture.

The drama began early as 13 minutes in, Irlam keeper Lee White went down injured.

He was replaced by defender Alex Francis, who was forced to pick up the gloves for the remainder of the game.

Former Heys striker, Kaiden Barlow, had the ball in the net for Irlam at 21 minutes. But this was later ruled out for handball.

The Heys eventually broke the deadlock at the end of the first half, with a skillful finish from Connor Martin to put the visitors 1-0 up at the break.

Irlam answered quickly with a free kick goal in the 50th minute scored by John Main.

He then scored a screamer from 25 yards out to send Irlam in front and give the home spectators a local win!

A local derby with nothing short of entertainment and excitement ends in Irlam holding their heads higher.

Maybe the two free kick wonder strikes will be enough to stop their rivals promotion hopes.
