Salford City FC’s star striker, Matt Smith, has been named in the League Two Team of the Year.

Smith, the 34-year-old, has achieved his best scoring record in his career. So far, he’s netted 23 goals in the season with two games to play.

He is joint second with Wrexham’s Paul Mullin, while Notes County striker Macaulay Langstaff leads the total tally with 26 goals.

Matt Smith’s spot comes after being featured as part of the EFL League Two’s Team of the Week 12 times.

Despite the individual accolade, the Salford striker has mixed feelings about the award.

Smith spoke to the press and said: “It feels good, but it is bittersweet, as a collective it has not been the season we would have liked.

“I think when you look at where we finished last season, we were all hoping we would probably have had the season that Stockport have had, but it was not meant to be.

“But to pick up a personal award like this is obviously pleasing.

“I am just grateful to my teammates and staff for helping me because I am not the type of player that can win these things on his own.

“I am heavily reliant on the people around me, so this is more a testament to their service throughout the year.”

As a result of the disappointing season for The Ammies, this may just lift the fanbases spirits for now.

He continued: “During my career, whether that be in the Championship, or League One and Two, to receive different accolades and bits of recognition is always nice, whatever the level is.

“But this is a particularly pleasing one, to get rewarded for your consistency over the course of an entire season.

“It is not just for a flash in the pan moment, or a player of the month award, this is about consistency over 46 games, so that is probably the most pleasing thing.”
