watersport centre clean up

Salford’s landlocked waterways will see a significant boost in maintenance after the Salford Watersports Centre’s cleanup contract has been tripled.

The Salford Watersports Centre based at Salford Quays will be able remove more rubbish and litter from the water ways, with the contract extended from two hours to six hours a week.

The clean-up operation from the Watersports centre will see the team remove the vast quantities of rubbish using their boat – a familiar sight to many local residents.

But until now, their official contract only covered two hours of work each week, despite the large scale of the problem.

Now, local campaigners have welcomed a breakthrough after sustained efforts to have this reviewed.

Councillor Jonathan Moore, who has long championed environmental improvements in the Quays, took on the issue as part of a broader campaign with Councillor Heilbron to improve the area’s cleanliness.

Cllr Moore said: “They were already doing more than the two they were being paid for, so this is a just and equitable outcome for them as well as good news for residents.”

Cllr More also continued to raise concerns about the role of local businesses in contributing to the growing rubbish problem,  near St Peter’s Basin and Ontario Basin.

“I’ve suggested that the council approaches McDonald’s for a contribution given that the amount of rubbish increased so much when they opened,” he said.

He concluded with a thank you to the council officers, as he added: “A special thank you to the council officers who have sorted this out – I won’t embarrass them by naming them, but they know who they are!”

The decision to extend the contract has been welcomed by residents and environmental campaigners who hope this is a step toward a cleaner, more cared-for Quays area – especially as footfall increases during the warmer months.
