Salford City continued their winning league form as they travelled to away to South Wales, beating Newport County 1-0.

Ade Oluwo’s finish early in the second half was enough to separate the sides, while Matty Young made a couple of top saves to keep a first clean sheet of the season.

The Ammies came into the fixture in good form, coming off the back of an important win against Accrington Stanley, 2-1 – and playing a team they hadn’t beaten since April 2023.

And with the whistle kicking off the game, both sides took some time to get started – with the main action coming after a quarter of an hour.

Salford enjoyed the first of the blows, when Ben Woodburn had a sight at goal on the volley in the 12th minute but sent it wide.

The Ammies had a second chance with Luke Garbutt clipping a shot over the bar as Salford tried a unique training ground corner routine.

And with Salford growing into the game, Newport’s first real chance materialised after the half hour mark in the first half, when they intercepted a pass and took the ball forward.

The ball worked up the left-hand side of the pitch, with Cameron Evans’ cross headed away at the back post by the sturdy Salford defence.

The defended cross found Matt Smith, who was able to move the ball in-field before hitting a shot that was blocked for a corner – but nothing came of it.

And it seemed for periods of the game that both sides were quite level, Newport were having a decent spell – before Salford City once again broke from the home sides corner.

Salford broke forward from it with Ros Longelo caught late just outside the Newport box on the right – setting up for a Luke Garbutt free-kick.

And after scoring last weekend against Accrington, he took charge of the freekick, and his effort from a tight angle was good enough of the crossbar and came off the cross bar.

The ricochet of the cross bar found the feet of Kadeem Harris, who’s shot was charged down and dropped for Oluwo to head, but Nik Tzanev reacted well to catch.

And with both sides having the chances, the whistle blew for half-time with level scores.

Despite a level performance in the first 45 minutes, Salford City started quickly in the second half and were able to take the lead.

Six minutes into the half, Luke Garbutt spotted the overload ahead of him at a free kick on the left and picked out Josh Austerfield.

Austerfield laid the ball off for Woodburn to turn back for Kallum Cesay, whose shot was blocked for a corner.

Grant played it short for Woodburn, and his cross was perfectly teed up to the back post where Oluwo arrived to finish cooly with the outside of his foot.

The unique finish left everyone amazed, as Salford celebrated his second goal in two away games in League Two.

And despite Salford’s lead, Newport had a decent chance to respond as Harris stopped a Newport attack through the middle at the expense of a free kick 25 yards from goal.

Ben Lloyd stepped up, but his effort failed to test goalkeeper Matty Young, as the ball sailed high over the crossbar.

In the 74th minute the visitors could have wrapped the points up when Longelo carried the ball forward up the right and picked out Cesay in space on the right of the area, but the midfielder slammed his low shot just beyond the far post.

Ultimately though it wasn’t needed as the Ammies extended their unbeaten away run to nine games since the end of February, moving up to fourth in the league table.

Salford City will now redirect their focus to Walsall, where they will look to continue their winning momentum, especially away from home at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.
