An arts programme in Salford has been awarded £750,000 of council funding to improve grassroots access to arts and culture.

The Re-Centre project, headed up by a consortium involving the University of Salford, Salford Community and Voluntary Services, Salford City Council and Salford Community Leisure, was successful in its bid for funding that will see events take place across the City from 2026-2029.

Salford’s grant is part of a wider investment across the country, with £8.5 million being spent on nine Creative People and Places projects (CPP) in the North West.

The National Lottery-funded CPP initiative allows communities to create and deliver cultural activities in areas where involvement in arts and culture events is below average.

“Re-Centre in Salford aims to unlock the potential within people, reactivate places that matter and will mobilise and amplify artistic activity and insights across the rapidly evolving city,” a statement says.

Salford has been awarded a £750,000 grant.

“CPPs bring together community, grassroots and cultural organisations as partners to take the lead in choosing, creating and taking part in creative and cultural activities. CPPs are empowering local people to pursue the art they want, where they live.”

Professor Nic Beech, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Salford, noted: “As an anchor institution for Salford and a proud civic university, we are privileged to lead the Re-centre Consortium, collaborating with partners across the city to deliver this important work which will inspire, empower and foster local pride.

Re-centre will support communities and amplify seldom-heard voices across our city to create, make, reshape and distribute new and existing arts and cultural experiences across Salford.”
Salford Mayor Paul Dennett was delighted with the decision to award Salford funding.

“Thank you so much on behalf of the City of Salford to everyone involved in the Re-centre bid, he said.

“My thanks and sincerest appreciation must also be conveyed to Arts Council England for selecting the City of Salford’s bid within what has clearly been an exceptionally competitive Creative People and Places programme.

“I really look forward to working with colleagues to deliver excellent, quality and impactful outcomes for the City of Salford and our residents, families and communities.”
