Swinton Moorside Cricket Club have launched a crowdfunding page to help refurbish their outdoor nets, improving the play of the junior teams.
The goal of the club is to raise £2000 to repair the nets, to not only improve the play of the teams but to make sure the nets are safe and fit for purpose.
Faulty cricket netting doesn’t only affect how players are able to play the game, but if injury is caused by this it can affect the club itself.
Lol Duffy at Swinton Moorside Cricket Club spoke about the dangers of having unsafe equipment: “It could be quite dangerous if you’re not careful because obviously if there’s holes in the nets the ball can go through.”
Maintenance of the netting falls on the club, but funding for this can be expensive which many local cricket clubs can’t afford. This is why Swinton have started a crowdfunder to help with these maintenance costs.
Swinton are hoping to raise two thousand pounds to go towards refurbishing the nets at the cricket club and with each donation, Crowdfund Salford have pledged to match it. The nets are used all throughout summer by all teams, making a great spot for people in the community to exercise and meet new people.
“For all the kids, for all the children playing cricket there its very, very important.”
Swinton Moorside Cricket club was established in 1890 and has both senior and junior teams, meaning all ages can learn and play cricket at the club.
This is an issue that has not only affected Swinton but many cricket clubs across Salford, with a lack of funding to the clubs, maintenance of equipment is extremely difficult.
So far, the club has raised £925 which is 46% of the way to their target, and with 69 days left on the fundraiser, meeting the goal is looking likely for the club.
The support for the club has been immense, especially within the local area. “There’s quite a lot of support for us in that sense,” said Lol.
