Salford Quays hosted a series of illuminated artworks for the twelfth year over the first weekend of December.

Twelve light displays were installed across Salford Quays from December 4 to December 7 as part of Salford’s free annual Lightwaves exhibition.

Each evening of the display, Salford Quays and Media City were brought to life by the twelve interactive and thought-provoking artworks.

A completely free event for the whole family, the Lightwaves captured the imaginations of all ages with their bright, colourful displays and unique interactive elements.

Lightwaves 2025 started with Positive Spin, a 5.5m high interactive arcade-inspired display created by Invisible Wind factory and illustrator Liz Harry. The artwork aimed to create a space of fun and promote positivity.

Following this, outside The Lowry theatre was the immersive Our Town by Elisa Artesero: an expressive reflection of its’ audience through a silhouette effect. Our Town celebrated twenty-five years of The Lowry and the people of Salford.

Lining the bridge to Media City was the Eternal Ensemble, by Onyva Studios. Showing the repetitive movements and sounds of the cello, Eternal Ensemble captured the beauty and strength of music.

Across the water was the joyful Happy As The Day Is Long display by Stellar Creates; an outdoor silent disco lit by its’ langer-than-life mirrorball. With a locally curated playlist to listen to, and the bright colours of the mirrorball reflected in the water, visitors enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of this unique display.

Next was the dazzling display by the Academy of Live Technology; Triskelion. Representing the tree primal forces, Earth, Water, and Fire, Triskelion embodied the unity and connection between humanity and the elements through immersive lights and audio.

Around the Blue Peter Garden were some more shining displays including Stitching Light আলো দিয়ে গাঁথা by Emergency Exit Arts, Through No.4 by Liz West, The Relic of Mirchwood Forest by Laura Spark, and Enchanted Exhanges by Tine Bech Studios.

Projected onto the buildings of Media City, Hope is the thing with feathers by Illuminos turned the urban landscape of Salford Quays into a calming and powerful visual display of Emily Dickenson’s poem of the same name. Meanwhile, Molecular Clouds by Dashka Patel explored the science of climate change through dynamic imagery.

Finally, The University of Salford and Emma Nuttall brought Constellations of Us, an interactive starscape installation that immersed viewers into the space beyond Earth.

Engaging and visually enticing, Salford’s Lightwaves 2025 brought together audiences of all ages for another year of fascinating and thought-provoking visual spectacles.
