Salford residents can make their way into the city centre more easily thanks to a newly opened cycling and walking route.
A safer pedestrian and cycling route running through the Chapel Street and the New Bailey areas has been unveiled by Salford Council.
A month after roadworks which disrupted traffic in the region finished ahead of schedule, one kilometre of high-quality walking infrastructure and one kilometre of dedicated cycling provision have been opened
12 new trees have been planted along the route and 11 new benches have been installed.
A 100-square-metre rain garden has also been constructed to prevent flooding in the area.
Salford Council say the project rebalances road space in favour of people travelling on foot and by bike, while still accommodating buses and general traffic.
Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development at Salford City Council, welcomed the new route being opened.
He said: “This new route is a major step forward in making it safer, easier and more pleasant for people to walk and cycle around Chapel Street and New Bailey. The area is a key gateway to Manchester city centre and incredibly well used.
“The improvements create a more attractive environment in our city and will encourage people to choose more sustainable ways of travelling.”
