Plans for a new green initiative have been launched ahead of Salford’s centenary year celebrations.
Salford Council has unveiled Planet 100, a programme focusing on Salford businesses and a commitment to “a cleaner and more sustainable Salford.”
The council is inviting local businesses to participate in shaping the programme, sharing business event ideas, and contributing through sustainability-focused events, face-to-face training sessions, and informative webinars.
Councillor Teresa Pepper said: “There is already a significant amount of work underway in Salford to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. But lasting impact depends on collective action, and everyone has an important role to play.
“A strong, citywide approach, driven by shared purpose, is essential to ensure the decisions we make today protect and benefit both current and future generations.”
Planet 100 will aim to work towards ten “key themes of sustainability engagement to drive environmental action.”
These themes come alongside the city’s “This is our Salford” corporate plan set out in 2024, which outlined the need for further efforts towards lessening the impact of both the city’s carbon footprint and the effects of environmental challenges posed by rising climate threats.
Although Salford already boasts several significant sustainability projects, such as zero-emission buses, solar farms, and Eden, a 12-storey “living” office block dubbed “Europe’s largest living wall”. Planet 100 recognises that though significant, these projects make up only a small part of the work that needs to be done to achieve a net-zero target.
