Salford Museum and Art Gallery is hosting a banner making workshop on March 25 inspired by the Our Salford Voices Exhibition.

The exhibition featured a banner celebrating 100 years of Salford and capturing the meaning of the city by putting its people firmly at the heart of celebrations.

The workshop will be led by artists Chris Alton and Emily Simpson, who helped with the banner celebrating 100 years of Salford.

Chris said: “It’s less that banners bring communities together and more that they make communities and their values more visible.

“A community might come together to make a banner but ultimately the community exists first.”

Participants will be shown how to design their own banner using different things like images, symbols, and text. They will have prompts and templates to help them start.

The session is suitable for all sewing levels and no previous experience is necessary.

Attendees will be asked to consider themes of local pride and identity when they approach making the banner or planning what they are going to do, meaning they can make something that shows pride and appreciation for their local area.

Chris said: “The banners that people make during the workshop that we’re leading on the 25th will be finished within the two-hour session.”

The workshop runs from 6pm-8pm and costs £30 per person with all material provided.
