Children at a Salford primary school were ecstatic as they were paid a surprise visit by a Manchester United legend.

Treble-winner and Class of 92 member Nicky Butt was a special guest at a St Phillips RC Primary School morning assembly, sharing memorable stories from his illustrious playing career and offering advice to excited pupils.

In a similar style to the post-match interviews Butt negotiated throughout his career, the former Salford City owner fielded thought-provoking questions about training, routines, memorable matches and life after professional football.

He offered pupils unique insight into life at the highest level of the game and spoke about the value of dedication, discipline and hard work in achieving your goals.

The morning was rounded off with a signed photo for all pupils involved, creating unforgettable memories for the children involved.

Butt made 387 appearances for Manchester United, winning 11 trophies during his 12-year spell at the club.
His 18-year-old son, Ruben, is on the books of Salford City and has made a bright start to life as a professional footballer.

He netted a brace as Salford beat Wolves Under-21s 4-2 in the Vertu Trophy in November and it is hoped he will continue to develop within a team challenging for promotion from League Two.

Nicky Butt’s shock visit was part of an initiative by Salford City’s charitable arm, Foundation 92, to provide schools with exclusive experiences such as player visits, rewards assemblies, mentoring opportunities, workshops, and community-based enrichment activities designed to inspire pupils both in and outside the classroom.

The charity has urged schools across Salford to put themselves forward to benefit from similar opportunities. More information can be found on the Foundation 92 website.
