A Salford MP has urged residents to step forward and take a leading role in shaping the future of their community, as applications open for positions leading a major new regeneration programme.
Worsley and Eccles MP Michael Wheeler has called on people in Brookhouse and Peel Green to apply for positions on a new Neighbourhood Board that will oversee the £20 million Pride in Place initiative over the next decade.
The scheme aims to deliver long-term improvements to the area, with funding directed towards projects such as upgrading parks and public spaces, supporting community groups, improving safety, and backing grassroots initiatives that bring residents together.
The programme will be shaped by local people, with the Neighbourhood Board working alongside Salford City Council, community organisations and the MP to decide priorities.
The Neighbourhood Board are actively recruiting an Independent Community Chair and several Board members.
The Chair will lead collaboration between residents and stakeholders, helping to set the overall vision and guide a long-time investment plan. Board members will represent the community and ensure local voices directly influence how funding is spent.
Wheeler stated that the initiative is designed to put residents “at the centre of decisions” and stressed that formal experience is not required.
“This programme is about putting local people at the centre of decisions about how this money is spent,” he said. “You do not need formal experience to get involved. What matters is care for our community, a willingness to listen, and a commitment to work with others.”
He added that many people already contribute to their communities in informal ways and should consider putting themselves forward.
“I would strongly encourage anyone interested, even if you are unsure, to take a closer look,” he stated. “The strength of this programme will come from having a wide range of voices and experiences involved.”
Applications are now open, with further details available through Salford CVS.
