Salford-born social media personality Angry Ginge has said he received a torrent of abuse online for “standing up to racism” at England’s World Cup game against Ghana.
The 24-year-old, whose real name is Morgan Burtwistle, attempted to get a man he accused of making racist remarks removed from the match at Boston Stadium on Tuesday.
The influencer said that, despite his attempt to “stand up to” comments he described as “incredibly racist”, stewards refused to eject the accused man.
“It is absolutely not good enough from the American stewards,” he insisted. “The message before the game in football is always ‘Kick It Out’. I have gone and reported him, but he has not been kicked out of the stadium.”
The winner of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! later posted on Instagram about abusive and threatening comments he claimed to have received in relation to the incident.
He posted screenshots of the derogatory messages with a caption that read: “Standing up to racism gets you this? What a world we live in.”
Burtwistle, who grew up on a council estate in Eccles and was previously Head Boy at Salford City Academy, said it “was only right for me to stand up and deal with this.”
In a YouTube video he posted on Thursday, Burtwistle said he showed the stewards footage of the accused man being racist, adding that there were five witnesses.
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Burtwistle stated. I just think it’s wrong on every single level that people can get away with it.”
He claimed a steward told him the man would only have been removed if he made another racist remark, a response Birtwistle described as “ridiculous.”
