Salford residents will head to the polls at the end of July to vote for the next Greater Manchester mayor – and the list of all seven candidates standing has been confirmed.

Candidates from the Conservative Party, the Green Party, the Labour and Co-operative Party, the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, Restore Britain and an Independent will be on the ballot paper when people across the city region vote in the Greater Manchester Mayoral by-election on 30 July.

The by-election was triggered when Andy Burnham was elected as the MP for Makerfield in June.

As a sitting MP is not legally allowed to hold a metropolitan mayor role that has powers over local policing, Burnham stepped down from his position as GM mayor.

With the post vacant, people living across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester will elect Burnham’s successor at the end of this month.

Voters will be able to select a first and second choice of candidate as the supplementary votes (SV) system replaces the first-past-the-post used in the last election.

Under the SV system, the leading candidate needs to claim 50 percent of the vote in the first round, or the top two candidates go into a run-off where second preference votes for the eliminated candidates are counted.

Anyone not currently registered to vote has until midnight on Tuesday, 14 July to do so.

Those who are registered to vote but want to do so by post have until 5pm on Wednesday 15 July to apply for a postal vote.

Polling stations across Salford and across Greater Manchester will be open from 7am until 10pm on 30 July and the results will be declared the following day, on Friday.

Without further ado, here’s the full list of the seven candidates standing in the Greater Manchester Mayoral by-election in alphabetical order:

– Sian Astley (Reform UK)

– Geraldine Coggins (Green Party)

– Bev Craig (Labour)

– Phil Eckersley (Conservative Party)

– Marcus Farmer (Independent)

– Richard Kilpatrick (Liberal Democrats)

– Marlon West (Restore Britain)
