Salford will be celebrating its history at St Thomas’ Church with Salford Histories Festival this weekend (October 3).
The occasion has been orchestrated to commemorate the history of Salford and the people who built it. In it’s centenary year, Salford has seen numerous occasions to honour the anniversary including music festivals, listing 100 Salford heroes, new ales, building makeovers and many more.
In this event Salford residents can look forward to bell ringing, organ recital, local history exhibitions, guest speakers, heritage displays and crypt for a quid tours all for free.
Paul Kelly, co-founder of the Salford Histories Festival, said: “We want to remember our history and commemorate the working people who built the history of Salford. History is everywhere. People always talk about ancient Rome and Egypt; well, we want to talk about our history and remember the people who built this city.
“We started this a long time ago, whether it’s the centenary year celebration or not, the history of the city should be celebrated whatever year it is. We think this day brings together everything the centenary celebrations give to Salfordians.
“We’re not going to be here forever. We need the youth to come into it and carry the baton into the future. We don’t take awards and honours; we just do this for the love of Salford, because that’s where we’re from.”
John Catterall, 79, co- founder of the festival, added: “Wherever you come from, you’re welcome here and whatever heritage is built today, it’s important those people understand they need to protect that heritage.”
Refreshments will be available throughout the day and residents are invited to ‘a free celebration of Salford’s rich history’.
