Salford Art Gallery has launched their Salford Art Club exhibition, giving artists in the city a chance to showcase their work.

This is the first-time members of the club have been able to display their art in person since lockdown.

Member of the club committee, Philip Westcott said: “We’re very fortunate to be able to meet in the art gallery which gives us this fantastic space to work and exhibit.

“We had an online exhibition but it’s not the same. Actually being in a place like this, people can come in and appreciate the work, have an emotional attachment to it possibly.

He added: “People have said they’ve felt much better after coming here.”

Salford Art Club was founded in 1947 with an impressive range of past members such as L.S. Lowry.

A yearly membership is 25 pounds and beginner artists are welcome.

77-year-old Susan Leech is also a club member, she said: “For people that want to join but feel like they can’t, there are all levels from absolute beginners to very proficient artists in the club.”

Members of the club share ideas about new pieces of artwork and help each other improve their skills.

Another member added: “There’s just so much that has come out of this place.

“Being working class people, I think that gives us our grit.”

The exhibition will run until March next year, so there is plenty of time to view the artwork.
