A boxing promoter in Salford says he is excited by the return of boxing to the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday night.

Gary Booth is promoting a night of boxing action at the venue, which will showcase some of the local area’s up-and-coming talent as a number of promising amateurs take the leap into the professional ranks.

Booth, coach at Manchester 31 Boxing Academy and promoter at Manchester 31 Boxing Promotions says he “can’t wait to get this show on the road”.

“I’m bringing boxing back to Irlam, with the lockdown, all the kids have been twiddling their thumbs and trying somewhere else, we’ve lost a few of them but we go again, we go again”.

The talent on Saturday’s show is a peek into the new breed of local boxers, including professional debutant Declan Dee, a promising amateur.

“He’s just turned 18 and had quite a good amateur career, I’ve got some high hopes for him, he’s very talented,” said Gary.

Gary also highlighted Malam Varela, a fighter who he’s worked closely with at his own gym and a man he has nothing but praise for.

He said: “Malam’s a good kid, honest, reliable, never lets you down and that’s what you need, you want fighters to be there for you when you’re ready to train them”.

He also spoke highly of Anthony Phythian, Joe Howarth and Layton Collymore, three guys who will also be looking to hit the ground running on Saturday.

Gary is keen to promote his belief that boxing can change lives and says it has the power to get fighters back on the straight and narrow.

“Boxing is more than a sport, it’s a life skill as well, especially for these kids, it gives them something different in life.”

Gary believes this event could be the start of a positive move to reignite the local boxing scene in Salford and rebuild after a difficult period.

“If you’re into boxing then that’s fine, but if not still come on down and give your support, we would really appreciate it”.
