69,840 households across Salford are set to get a £100 one off energy payment this winter.
Yesterday (October 28), Chancellor John Healey unveiled a budget that gives families and businesses breathing space from rising costs, with action on energy bills, fuel duty, wages and the everyday cost of living.
For families in Salford, a £100 Household Energy payment will be available to eligible households in Council Tax bands A-D this winter to help with rising energy costs.
Rebecca Long Bailey, the MP for Salford pointed out that the one off energy payment will be available to 69,840 homes across Salford.
The budget also extends the temporary 0% VAT rate on electricity until June 2027, while reforming gas standing charges to help make energy bills fairer.
The Government have launched their High Streets Strategy with allocations for the Derelict Buildings Fund.
In due course Salford City Council has been allocated £2.8 million from the £125 million Derelict Buildings Fund.
The funding will help transform neglected buildings in Salford into useful spaces that communities need.
Michael Wheeler MP for Worsley and Eccles said: “This Budget touches on many of the issues people have raised with me over recent months.
“I’m particularly pleased that Salford City Council has been allocated £2.8 million to help transform derelict buildings into spaces our communities need. Funding like this is an opportunity to breathe new life into neglected places, but it’s important that we turn that opportunity into real results.
“I’ll be pushing to ensure our communities benefit and that local people can see the difference this investment makes.”
The budget also sets out further investment in social and affordable housing, alongside a new £4.7 billion Your First Home scheme to help first-time buyers take their first step onto the property ladder.
There will be a minimum deposit requirement of 2.5% and the scheme is designed to help eligible buyers who may otherwise struggle to save for a deposit.
A further £1.5 billion in funding for social and affordable housing is set to deliver around 10,000 additional homes.
In terms of fuel duty, motorists will benefit from the extension of the 5p fuel duty cut until July 2027, helping households and businesses manage transport costs.
Thousands of businesses nationally will pay no businesses rates. For Salford , this means that independent shops and other eligible businesses will be given a helping hand to continue to serve the community. The Business Rate Relief threshold will rise from £12,000 to £18,000.
Wheeler said: “For me, this is about more than figures in a Budget. It’s about whether people feel more secure, whether families have a little more breathing space, whether our high streets can thrive and whether we’re building better opportunities for the next generation.
“There is more to do, but I want to see a future where people feel confident about what lies ahead. That’s what I’ll keep working towards.”
All of these measures are intended to support the people of Salford through the pressures they face now, while creating the conditions for stronger public services, economic growth and greater security in the years ahead.
