Salford’s Choral Society are stamping their date on the Christmas calendar with their annual performance of Handel’s Messiah on the 11th of December.
The 100-strong choir is busy rehearsing for the event which is set to be held on Sunday 11 December at 15:00.
The choir’s music director Tom Newall said: “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Messiah and over our 75-year history, it has become a fixture of Salford Choral’s repertoire.
Taking place at the Royal College of Music in Manchester, the performance includes the talented Baroque in the North Orchestra and professional soloists from the local music community.
Joining the choir for the Messiah will be professional soloists: Sarah Helsby Hughes (soprano); Imogen Garner (mezzo-soprano); Chris Why (tenor) and Edward Robinson (baritone).
This year the concert’s organisers have made an effort to attract new audiences through a new ticket scheme. Mr Newall continued: “We want to encourage people who typically don’t attend classical music concerts – or those whom the cost of tickets may be a barrier – to come and give it a try.
“It’s something we trialed at our last concert, and it worked really well – we hosted around 20 local international students and young singers from Salford Cathedral, who had a wonderful evening with us.
“One of the international students who attended under the community ticket scheme was Warsita Ardiyanti. She said: “Enjoying a live classical music concert is one of my dreams since I was a child. It was an amazing concert and touching. I was amazed with the beautiful music and choir.”
The Messiah by Salford Chroal Society will take place at 3pm and tickets are available at £19 and £16 for concessions.
