Rebecca Long-Bailey has opposed politicians having second jobs and encouraged MPs to publish donors after a major news corporation investigates Westminister’s accounts

The news comes after SkyNews revealed that MP’s have earned a cumulative £17.1m on top of regular salaries since the 2019 election.

According to the news outlet, MP for Salford and Eccles, Rebecca Long-Bailey has declared 12 financial interests since the last election, all £406,800 coming from five trade unions and Labour members. These include Unite, Momentum Campaign (Services), The Communications Workers Union (CWU), Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT).

The largest donation declared by Ms Long Bailey was £100,000 from trade union, Unite, followed by £76,830 from Momentum Campaign.

Ms Long-Bailey’s donations put her in the top 2% of MPs, with only 10 politicians taking in more money since the last Parliament.

Ms Long-Bailey took to Facebook to share her views on MP’s earnings.

The post read: “I was proud that my leadership campaign donations came solely from trade unions and Labour members who supported an extension of worker’s rights, a plan to end ”In Work’ Poverty by increasing the living wage, and taxing the super rich to properly fund free public services.

“Trade union donations are the cleanest money in politics, there is no secrecy about why these donations are made to the Labour Party, They created the Labour Party and it was set up to protect the lives and interests of workers.

“Frankly there is no comparison at all between a trade union who is a member led democratic organisation already aligned to the Labour Party making a donation to the Party, and an oil company or city firm making a donation to an MP to lobby a specific interest of their own.”

During the current Parliament, Labour has estimated to have received at least £32.4m from 165 sources.

The MP also agreed with Sir Keri Starmer’s view to ban second jobs for politicians. In the post she continued: “I have no outside earnings whatsoever, beyond my salary as an MP. Being an MP is a full time job, it is a privilege and you are there to solely serve your constituents. I would urge banning second jobs.
