We set out onto the streets of Salford to find out which pie earns its crust for residents during National Pie Week.

We did a poll on Twitter to find out which pie was the most popular. The results started off with Meat and Potato with 35% of votes, followed closely behind by Cheese and Onion with 31.6%, then Steak and Ale with 15.8%, and finally Chicken and Mushroom with 13.2%.

After the result of meat and potato taking the pie crown on social media, we wanted to see which pie wore the golden crust crown in the streets of Salford.

We first met John Hadfield and Julie Neil. John started us off with the least popular in our Twitter poll stating his favourite was Chicken and Mushroom. Whereas Julie went with the second most popular of Cheese and Onion.

Maria and Mike Beardll started us off with a draw with Maria stating, Meat and Potato and Mike switching it up with Cheese and Onion.

We then spoke to Carole Wild who was walking with her friends. She was the only pie lover in proximity and said that Cheese and Onion were her favourite, giving another point to the underdog.

And then finally we spoke to builder, Dean Hodgekinson who gave us the winning point to Cheese and Onion stating, “can’t beat a classic Cheese and Onion.”

After all this Pie debating, we decided to reach out to a local business to see the real cham-pie-on.

Walkden shop, Piggy in Middle’s, Brian Henson, shared the businesses pie stats.

He said: “We sell a good range of pies and pasties. The most popular is Meat and Potato pie or pasty. Next is our Cheese and Onion which we consider to be our best pie. Made with extra mature cheddar its like no other cheese pie we’ve tried.

“We also sell meat pies, whilst pie which were named after the card game whist. These pies years ago would have been served up in the pub on games night.

“Pork pies though are still very popular, more so at Christmas. Where we have extra orders to keep up with demand.”

Despite what the twitter poll resulted, it seems meat and potato has not managed to win Salford over. The good old Cheese and onion Pie took the crust crown this Pie week.
