The UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is set to return to Salford Quays for the 11th time this June.

The event will run over two days from June 17-18 in collaboration between Xinhua Chinese Association, Salford City Council and the British Dragon Boat Racing Association.

The festival will host amateur and experienced boat racers for a “fun-filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports activity”.

On Saturday the 17th June, amateur boat racers will take to the water with more experienced racers competing on the second day of the event, Sunday the 18th June.

Neil Pickles, Chairman of the Boat Racing Association said: “This year’s Chinese Dragon Boat Festival…will be a great opportunity to showcase the best club groups from around the country. As well as enjoying the Chinese culture, which is so important and ingrained in our sport.”

Alongside water sports, the event will host cultural performances, including tai chi and kung fu as well as lessons in Chinese calligraphy.

The festival will donate 10 per cent of each team’s entry fees to Action for Children; a charity supporting and protecting vulnerable young people in the UK.

Dr Hanxin Yang, Chairman of Xinhua Chinese Association said: “We look forward to building friendship and understanding through this event here in Salford. Our aim is to help make contributions to multiculturalism and an inclusive society.”

The launch of the Dragon Boat Festival and Memorandum of Understanding was held on the 9th March at The Lowry where an agreement to work collaboratively on the event was signed by representatives of the Parties involved.

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett said: “I’m delighted that Salford City Council is supporting what promises to be another fantastic event for the city. This event presents a great opportunity for us to showcase our city to all those coming to take part and experience dragon boat racing.”

The festival has been hosted at Salford Quays for the last decade and promises to “be bigger and better than ever before”.

The event is open to competitors aged 16 and over and the teams must include 10 people.

Applications are now open on the festival website and teams have until Friday the 12th May 2023 to apply.
