Visitors to The Lowry Galleries now have the opportunity to have their very own sculpted creations displayed alongside a new exhibition.
As part of the current exhibitor The Ambassadors by internationally acclaimed artist, Hew Locke, visitors now have the chance to create their very own designs to be displayed.
The guest’s displays will play into the exhibition’s central theme of subversions of power, as four Black figures on horseback offer a counterpoint to traditional statues and monuments.
After sculpting their mini clay monument, visitors can photograph their work to share on social media before placing it in the exhibition.
In a gallery space that has been transformed to look like an artists’ studio or workshop, visitors can also draw their designs for a statue on horseback.
Locke is a Guyanese-British sculptor whose practice is rooted in the languages of colonial and post-colonial power, employing visual cues and symbols of authority across different cultures and histories.
He said: “I’ve become a completely obsessed statue-spotter in recent years. When traveling around Britain, the first things I’m looking for are the statues – where they are and who they are of. I often think ‘why have they got a statue to this person and why to that person?”
His work invites us to consider our relationship to the past and dominant historical narratives, highlighting their relevance to today’s society.
