A grant worth £830k to support the creation of thousands of new bike parking spaces across Greater Manchester has been announced.

The programme is funded through the Department for Transport and Active Travel England Capability.

Grants for new bike parking spaces are available for up to a maximum of £15,000.

The grant is open to a plethora of organisations across the Greater Manchester region.

These include small business, community interest groups, education providers as well as NHS healthcare providers.

The funding is intended to encourage anyone using such infrastructure to cycle to these locations, targeting staff, pupils, residents, patients and visitors.

The funding for new bike parking spaces comes as Salford endorsed its cycle routes with former Olympians Chris Boardman and Dame Sarah Storey.

While the attitude towards cycling in the region seems to be on the up, notably with the visit of the Tour of Britain in early September, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak seems to be backing the car.

The PM announced at the Conservative Conference in Manchester yesterday that he will end “anti-car measures” and implement a “long-term plan to back drivers.”

The last cycle parking grant programme created over 1600 new cycle parking spaces funded at key community locations.

Applications for the grant closes Friday November 10 2023.
