A Salford woman who became a victim of theft in the Trafford Centre hopes the new police force will protect others.
The presence of officers at the shopping centre was announced earlier this month by the GMP.
The idea is that they will operate as a neighbourhood police team, with their designated office being easily accessible to the public wishing to report any incidents.
Alexandra Marie, from Salford, had her phone stolen at the Trafford Centre in 2021 and never got it back as the criminal was able to get away
“I was shopping the January sales and realised that my phone wasn’t in my pocket when I went to pay,” Alexandra said.
“It was scary that my phone had been stolen, especially as I had no idea that it had gone.”
Alexandra reported the crime to the Trafford Centre at the time but was told they were unable to help.
She then decided to phone the police.
Alexandra explained: “Unfortunately, the Trafford Centre staff couldn’t do anything for me but by the time I phoned the police, it was too late as the phone had been stored at a private address, which they can’t access without a warrant.
“Within two weeks, my phone had travelled to Africa.”
Alexandra’s phone was never found, but she remains hopeful that the new police force will mean others will find justice.
Alexandra said: “I hope that others will get justice as it’s so frustrating to be a victim.
“The new force will mean that people will be able to report crimes easily to people that have the power to do something.
“People deserve to feel safe in public and not feel like there’s a target on their back.”
