Chinese New Year Salford

Chinese New Year kicks off this week and Salford has music, food and art in celebration of the occasion.

The Lunar New Year will start this Saturday 10 February, commencing the Year of the Dragon – known as a fortunate year in Chinese astrology.

The celebration will last for 15 days with the final worldwide ‘lantern festival’ which marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

The celebration is a national holiday for many across Asia including South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan. Although, UK celebrations are going ahead this year in style and Salford is included!

Many Chinese restaurants in the Salford area have organised special events and menu changes to honour the occasion this year.

Hong Kong Choi on Broughton Lane who “prioritise flavour and quality above all” are bringing in the New Year by decorating their restaurant and serving special dishes this month.

The owner said: “We will be open right through the Chinese New Year period this weekend, welcoming all!”

A calligraphy workshop will go ahead at Kargo MKT this Sunday 10, where there will be a chance to learn techniques behind the ancient art form. The workshop will run from 11am to 2pm and visitors will also be able to enjoy a live performance featuring traditional Chinese music.

Chinese market at Kargo in Salford ,Chuan Chuan, which serves traditional street food is also preparing for Chinese New Year.

Vendor Zhao Liu explained how important the celebration is in Chinese culture. He added: “It is about family and happiness and it is an exciting time in China and Hong Kong.”

Chuan Chuan will be serving their speciality, 4 skewers for £6 across the New Year period.
